Measured, not guessed
Face Shape Detector — Find Yours with the Math Shown
Upload a front-facing photo and the detector classifies your face among six styling shapes — oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong — and shows the three width ratios that decided it.
In short: A face shape detector reads three proportions from your photo — face length over cheek width, jaw over cheek width, and forehead over cheek width — and matches them against the six classic styling categories. Ours prints every ratio and names a second 'also close' shape when the call is tight, instead of inventing a confidence percentage.

The six shapes
The six classes this face shape detector uses
Stylists' categories, translated into measurable ratio windows.
Oval — the face shape detector's balanced class
Length moderately greater than width, gently tapering jaw: length/width near 1.3–1.5 with a jaw ratio below the cheek. The category most faces fall nearest to.
Round vs square in the face shape detector
Both are short, wide categories. Round keeps soft curves — jaw ratio high but length/width low; square adds straight lines and a jaw ratio approaching the cheek width itself.
Heart, diamond, oblong — longer face shape classes
Heart: wide forehead, narrow pointed jaw. Diamond: cheeks dominate while forehead and jaw both taper. Oblong: length/weight ratio pushes past 1.5 with similar widths throughout.
These six are styling vocabulary, not anthropology — there is no lab-standard boundary where 'oval' ends and 'oblong' begins. A face shape detector earns trust by showing which side of each fuzzy boundary your measurements land on, which is exactly what the ratio sheet in your result does.
How it decides
How the face shape detector classifies you
Three measured ratios, scored against each class's window, ranked in the open.
- 1
The face shape detector measures your widths
From landmarks: forehead width across the temples, cheek width at its widest, jaw width across the jaw angles, and face height from mesh top to chin.
- 2
Face shape detector window scoring
Length/cheek, jaw/cheek and forehead/cheek each score against every class's ratio window. The face shape detector weights the length ratio heaviest, then ranks the classes.
- 3
Face shape detector result with reasons
The top class wins; when the runner-up scores within 85% of the winner, it's listed too. Your three ratios print beside the verdict, so the reasoning is auditable.
When the photo fails the quality gate — heavy yaw, occlusion, low resolution — the face shape detector says uncertain rather than guessing. A classification tool that can't admit doubt is a random generator with extra steps.
Why it matters
What the face shape detector result is actually for
The categories were invented by stylists for a reason: they compress guidance.
Glasses: frame shape counterbalances your face shape — angular frames on round faces, rounded frames on square ones, bottom-heavy frames on hearts. Hair: volume placement steers the perceived outline — height at the crown for round, width at the sides for oblong. Beard: keeping or trimming the jaw line changes the jaw ratio the face shape detector measures, in real time on your face.
The face shape detector result page carries styling notes for your shape — short, practical, sourced from the same logic opticians and stylists use. The face shape detector does the measuring; you keep the decisions.
Photo guide
Photographing for an accurate face shape detector reading
The face shape detector reads silhouette ratios, so the silhouette must be true.
- Hair fully off the forehead and temples — bangs and side parts distort the forehead and cheek ratios the face shape detector relies on.
- Neutral, frontal pose: turned heads fake narrowing; chins up or down fake length.
- Neutral expression — a wide smile widens the jaw measurement slightly.
- Camera at eye level with a normal lens; close wide-angle selfies stretch the cheek width and bias toward round.
- Plain even lighting so the jaw-line landmarks track skin, not shadow.
Retest after a haircut or glasses change: the face shape detector verdict can legitimately shift when the measurable silhouette changes. The 'also close' second class often becomes the winner — that's the system being honest about boundary cases, not malfunctioning.

Beyond the face shape detector verdict
The same landmarks power the deeper dives.
The jaw and forehead ratios in your face shape detector result come from the same measurement frame as the face beauty ratio workbench, which adds thirds, spacing and the golden ratio comparison. The symmetry page examines the left-right differences the shape detector ignores by design, and the mirror tools let you study the silhouette live.
For scoring, the geometry index pages fold your proportions into their face shape aware composite — but shape remains the friendliest starting point on the site. The face shape detector answers a practical question with visible arithmetic, which is the whole philosophy of FaceReport.
